WORLD TRADE CENTRE MUSIC UPDATE: GREEN DAY AND MOBY HAVE THEIR SAY... BLUE SUFFER FOOT AND MOUTH... AND BEASTIES FANS WIN BUT SLIPKNOT FANS LOSE OUT...

GREEN DAY USE SITE FOR WAR DEBATE

Skate punkers Green Day are using their official website to spark debate about the recent US strikes on Afghanistan. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong posted a message encouraging fans to use the message board to express their opinions, whilst drummer Tre Cool has spoken out about the attacks, suggesting that killing people is not a good way to stop others dying. He quoted Martin Luther King: "You can murder a murderer but you can never murder murder itself"; and also spoke of his dislike for president George 'dubya' Bush: "I knew that day that George Bush was elected president that we were in deep, deep shit. I knew it. Some shit's gonna hit the fan now - the Bush family have been in the politics business too long to not have crazy enemies." The band release 'International Superhits', their greatest hits collection, on October 29.

MOBY SPEAKS: COULD US ATTACKS MAKE MUSIC MORE POLITICAL?

Moby has spoken again of the US terrorist attacks, saying that music can provide comfort in the face of what has happened and also give voice to political expression. The singerıs birthday is September 11 the same day as the attacks and he has already spoken about the attacks several times, initially criticising the US government for lax security. He told the Los Angeles Times that recent world events might drive artists to be more political; however he also commented that he probably wouldnıt be one of those artists.

STAR FEELS BLUE AFTER NYC COMMENTS

Lee Ryan, member of the boy band Blue, has had to apologise for comments he made about the terrorist attacks on the US. He said that the attacks had been "blown out of proportion", and that the plight of endangered species such as whales and elephants was more important. Even though he said at the time that he was not afraid to speak his mind, he has now retracted his statement and pledged a donation to a New York charity by way of an apology. He said, "I was trying to express my concerns for other issues close to my heart, but I realise now I did so in a very foolish way. I will donate my royalties from our next single to the Twin Towers fund."

BEASTIES HOLD BENEFIT CONCERT IN NYC

The Beastie Boys are holding a benefit concert in New York in the wake of the terrorist attacks, entitled 'New Yorkers Against Violence'. The concert will take place at Hammerstein Ballroom, Manhattan, on October 28 and 29. The 28th willfeature live sets from the Beasties alongside The Strokes, the B-52s, Cibo Matto, Saul Williams, Rival Schools and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Profits fromthe show will go to funds set up to help people affected by the September 11 attacks. The second night will the Beastie Boys joined by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Mos Def, The Roots and Afrika Bambaataa. Funds raised from the concerts will go to the New York Women's Foundation Disaster Fund and the New York Association For New Americans, both of which are helping victims of the terrorist attacks in New York.

And as the latest in a long line of bands...

SLIPKNOT TOUR CANCELLED
Slipknot have postponed their forthcoming tours of the UK, Japan and Australia, due to "international tensions, current conflict and growing safety problems". The dates will be rescheduled for 2002, with more details expected to be confirmed soon. The band's official statement has apologised to fans and reassured them that the gigs will happen and that tickets bought for the original dates will still be valid.

MADONNA...
...DONATES T-SHIRT TO CHARITY AUCTION

A charity auction of pop memorabilia, including a T-shirt worn by Madonna during her recent Drowned World Tour, is to take place at Christieıs next Monday. Organisers hope that the 60-lot sale will raise £100,000 for the charity Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood (CLIC), to provide accommodation in London for families with a child undergoing treatment. Madge's T-shirt alone is expected to fetch up to £10,000.

...WON'T MAKE LIKE A PIG FOR APHEX

Madonna recently phoned up Aphex Twin suggesting that they work together however, she reconsidered her offer when he asked her to make pig noises for the collaboration. Richard James' record company, Warp, confirmed that Madonna had expressed an interest in him, but James told reporters that he wanted her to make "grunts, moans and pig impersonations". Apparently, the star changed her mind at the last minute...

...SIGNS OAKEY

Madonna has signed Paul Oakenfold to her record label, Maverick. He is to release his debut album as a solo artist through the label in the US next year; the album will be released in the UK by Mushroom. Oakey has been working on his album in between DJ commitments; he has also recently collaborated on a track with Crazy Town vocalist Shifty Shellshock.

DEPARTURE RECORDS WANTS BANDS!!!

From SidStovold@aol.com

Hello everybody,
We, at mail order company Departure Records are looking to release a vinyl only compilation album in 2002 along similar lines to what Crass used to do with their Bullshit Detector albums in the eighties. So, if you're a punk poet, band or noise merchant then please send us something to listen to and consider. Any format is fine but we particularly want to hear from people who have something to say about life today and the world we live in and who haven't had official releases on vinyl made availabe yet. Quality is also therefore irrelevant.
Please send your stuff to...

Departure Records,
24b Alexandra Road,
Farnborough,
Hants,
GU14 6DA,
U.K

or email SidStovold@aol.com for further details.

If you're not a performer yourself but you know bands or people who are we'd be very grateful if you could pass this on for us. Cheers.

GLASTONBURY NEEDS NEW LICENSE TO STOP GATECRASHERS

Organisers of the Glastonbury Festival want a license to increase the size of the festival crowd by 30,000 to around 135,000. The extra tickets, they say, will provide funding for tighter security every year several festival goers gatecrash the event, but next year organiser Michael Eavis is planning to spend £1.5m on a new 12ft steel fence to discourage them. Council officials estimated that at June 2000ıs event, there were approximately 100,000 more people than was allowed for by the festivalıs entertainmentıs license, and Michael Eavis was fined £6,000 as a result. According to a festival spokesperson, a new license is crucial for ensuring the survival of the festival if the application is successful, another 20,000 tickets will be on sale for the 2002 festival, with the remaining 10,000 used for traders, staff and stewards. The license hearing is planned for November 29.

GARAGE STAR GETS LET OFF WITH FINE FOR GBH

So Solid Crew member Darren Weir's music career may have saved him from a jail sentence. Weir aka Scat D was in court on Friday following an attack on a 15-year-old girl, at which he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm. However, the UK garage artist only received a fine he was ordered by Cardiff Crown Court to pay £3,500 in compensation to the victim, plus an extra £1,500 fine and £500 costs.
The assault happened at a concert in Cardiff last December, where Weir punched the teenage girl in the face and broke her jaw in two places: surgeons had to insert metal plates into her jaw to repair it. Judge Christopher Llewellyn-Jones said to him in court: "You are a young man on the brink of a career which may be extremely successful I am satisfied that a prison sentence would have a significant adverse effect." He did not go on to add, "We know GBH against a young girl is a terrible crime but seeing as you're a pop star we'll let you get away with it."

BRITNEY SPEARS IS BAD FOR YOUR PIGS

A German farmer has been scaring off a plague of wild boars by playing Britney Spears records. The pigs, whilst they are a pest, are a protected species and must not be killed so farmer Herrmann-Josef Becker decided that music was the only way to drive them away. Apparently, Madonna and Robbie Williams didn't work too well, but when Britney was played, "the pigs come snorting out and running for the woods". Other farmers near Trier, Germany, are now considering using Britney tunes to scare the pigs away from their crops.
What was that scientists were saying about pigs being among the most intelligent animals on the planet?
