1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Karnivool - Sound Awake
This album has completely taken over my—and all of my bandmates—stereos, upon introduction to them earlier this year by way of ExplodingInSound.com. Sound Awake is truly a work of artistry and craftsmanship. The ability to create this sound on record and then execute it live (as 4 of us witnessed live in NYC at a small showcase this past September) is top notch and is truly something to aspire to. It's been a long time since a band has come along and had such an impact on us, as one. You could imagine we have the "differences of opinion" on all things musical as any band does between it's members, but Karnivool's Sound Awake was something we couldn't argue about.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Not to dodge the question, but I personally try not to claim any "heroes" but to have many inspirations (a word i use often). Heroes retain the possibility to let you down, though inspirations are for the moment you are moved by it.
If I had to pick though, they wouldn't be so much in the media, but they'd be the everywoman or man who wakes up each day and keeps on keeping on for the betterment of those around them.
As for villains? They don't need anymore press, Ruth. (laughing)
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
What's a Christmas cracker? I'd prefer Peppermint Bark over crackers any day this season, but to add some more non-humor, here it goes. I head this the other day:
Q. When did Santa Claus first start saying "Ho-Ho-Ho?"
A. When he saw your wife, mother and sister all in line for the photo session on Santa's lap.
(Damn) This Desert Air are working on a new EP due for release in the New Year. Watch this space for an official announcement...

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
BATS - Red in Tooth and Claw. [RM REVIEW]
I've been a huge fan of BATS since the first time we went to Ireland and I got to hear their EP (Cruel Sea Scientist) and it was amazing! I was eagerly awating the arrival of their debut and it didnt dissapoint me at all. Plus we got to do a tour with them earlier this year so I heard all of the awesome album tracks live for 5 nights in a row. Doesn't get better than that.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
I didnt see that many films this year. But the ones I did were awesome. I thought the old man in UP! was great as a Hero. A bit unorthadox and I was surprised how spry he was for an older gentleman but he was great.
Villain, I guess Shepperd from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was a very good villain. What a twist! Sorry to anyone who's playing the story mode and hasn't got that far yet.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
What is Santa's favourite pizza?
One that's deep pan, crisp and even.
The new Blakfish album Champions [5/5 RM REVIEW] is out now on Hassle.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
I havent seen it yet and it's not technically an album but the music I've heard from '9' which is mostly Deborah Lurie but Danny Elfman has done the main themes. I emailed him once and asked him if I could be his apprentice, the reply got lost somewhere in the internet I think, maybe stuck between porn and wikipedia. Matt told me I didnt like music the other day though, so I dont mind if you delete all this and put '0' instead.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Doctors are my heroes, as are people that can eat nails regardless of the year.
Villains - anyone allergic to the top 3 strings on a guitar,
....ultimately if you are looking for a clever answer dont ask someone who jumps around with a guitar to loud music.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
Knock Knock!
Who's there?
Pudding.
Pudding who?
Pudding in your face!
Chickenhawk's latest EP A. Or Not? [RM REVIEW] is out now on Brew Records

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Baroness - Blue Record [RM REVIEW]
Just the right amount of Southern twang, just the right amount of sludge, just the right amount of '70s folk whimsy, and just the right amount of hardcore punk balls. Then again, The Maccabees 'Wall Of Arms' is pretty tops for completely different reasons.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Heros: us
Villains: them
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
From the Zen Crackers cracker line: What's the difference between a duck? One of its legs is both the same.
Crazy Arm's debut Born To Ruin [RM REVIEW] is out now on Xtra Mile Recordings.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
PJ Harvey and John Parish - A Man A Woman Walked By
The best thing she's done for years, possibly since last time they collaborated. I think when PJ works with JP it takes the pressure off - puts her in an environment where she has most trust, so her singing is out of this world and she seemed to enjoy the gigs more. The band was incredible. Saw the show twice, in Austin and Brighton.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Hero: Malcolm Tucker, Malcom Gladwell, men called Malcolm in general.
Villain: Glenn Beck, so really Rupert Murdoch. Not men called Glenn in general though, because I wouldn't want to unfairly besmirch Glen Quagmire who is morally on far safer ground than the FoxNews team.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
Did you hear about the Mexican fireman, he called his two sons Hosé and Hose B.
Is that racist? [No Comment - Ed.]
Chris T-T's seventh (!) album Love Is Not Rescue comes out on Mon 15 March 2010.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
The new Fireball Ministry record. I know technically it's not coming out until 2010, but my ears heard it in 2009 so im going to say that one. Why? Get a case of beer and a few buddies then play the record. Then you will know why.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Hero goes to George Carlin for writing his book "Last Words".
The Villain of the Year has to be whoever decided that Creed and Limp Bizkit should get back together.. I mean, Jesus, the country is falling apart and we are on the brink of world war III. Great! Just what we need - Fred Durst is back. Great timing dude!
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
What's the difference between a cadillac escalade and a golf ball?
Tiger Woods can drive a golf ball 400 yards! ....too soon?
The new self-titled album The Company Band [RM REVIEWS] is out now on Venture Capital Records.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
They aren't albums but I'm going to have to say:
Defeater - Lost Ground [5/5 RM REVIEW]...the song writing is incredible, the lyrics are fantastic and they are the best dudes ever.
Bon Iver - Blood Bank - just amazing.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
All of my heroes are dead.
Villains - More than life - worst band ever. Hahah. ;-)
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
Who hides in the bakery at christmas.....?
A mince spy.
Dead Swans new album Sleepwalkers [RM REVIEW] is out now on Bridge 9.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Russian Circles - Geneva [5/5 RM REVIEW]
Touring means lots of time in the van and as much as I like putting in the Tenacious D record and singing track 6 as loudly as I can, it's nice to put in a smart well done record that appeals to my artsy nerd side too.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
2009 kind of sucked so....
Heroes - My Mom, my friends, Stephanie Marlow, Makers Mark.
Villains - Love, Liars, Geppetto
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
I hope Santa brings me that mistletoe belt I asked for!
Defeater's new Lost Ground EP [5/5 RM REVIEW] and Traveller album [RM REVIEW] are out now on Bridge 9.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague
It's an assault to your senses in the best way Cannibal Corpse can do it. A long way from Eaten Back to Life but I mean that in a good way, they did not hold back and gave a brutal testimony of where they are today and where they want to take us. Not intended for fragile eardrums.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Villains: commercial media, reality shows and anyone that sacrificed art in order to get recognition...
Heroes: I have no heroes... I killed them all ;-)
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
Not exactly a christmas cracker joke but my all time favorite:
Pirate walks into a bar, bartender notices and says "hey you have a steering wheel down your pants"... pirate replies "arrrrgh it's driving me nuts!"
EvilMinded's brilliant new EP Necrotizing Fasciitis [RM REVIEW] and new album Complex Corrupt [RM REVIEW] are up for free download now. New album CTRL.ALT.DELETE is due on 16th January 2010.

FAKE PROBLEMS
1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Oh man. There are so many! I absolutely love Frank Turner's Poetry of the Deed [RM REVIEW], as well as "Outer South" by Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Heroes! Frank Turner for making such a good record and selling out so many massive shows, Chuck Ragan for being the nicest guy ever...
Villains? I'm not sure. I don't have too much bad to say about anyone. BUT, I have to answer so I'll say LEX LUTHOR from Superman for being such a freaking jerk.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
I have absolutely no idea what this means.
Who delivers a cat's Christmas presents?
SANTA PAWS!!!!!!!!! LOL
It's Great To Be Alive, the album from Fake Problems [RM REVIEW] is out now on Sideonedummy.

Matt Davies-Kreye
FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND
1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
I'm not sure if The Xcerts album In The Cold Wind We Smile [5/5 RM REVIEW] came out this year, but actually having a British band that can come out on tour with us whose record is absolutely mind blowing. It made me kind of really proud that there's British bands out there, particularly that band who are still very young, who make fucking great songs. It's really invested, well-written, well-developed, emotionally solid and really profound songs. I'm just really fucking stoked that there are bands making that kind of music, and not following the whole chugga-chuggah-chugga rawr rawr rawr kind of blueprint to success.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Heroes... Gav Burrough, he's my hero, because he's a man who single-handed has been able to come onboard with the band, toured the world with us for the first time, and made me feel like I should be really grateful for where I am and what I've achieved; because he's experiencing the things that I've experienced for seven years for the first time, and seeing him react to the same world that I've been seeing for seven years with a fresh perspective really made me take stock of where I am, and be real fucking happy about what we've done and not be a jaded bastard about it all. So there we go!
And Villains? Erm, I dunno, I am a nice guy, I don't hate anybody. Tell you what I hate, my villain - coleslaw, cheese and chips. Yep, that's a vice. This is a vice that I should not be having in a man of my age, where the pounds are starting to gather. I'm definitely not as healthy as I wish I would be. There's a lot of sleepless nights in front of the Wii Fit ahead of me, that's for sure!
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
Ohhh God, why do we have to have these questions? I don't remember any! I enjoy stand-up comedy, I love stand up comedy, but these little jokes printed on a shitty piece of paper in a cracker never remain in my head. Do you know why? Because they're shit jokes! You laugh at them at the table and they're gone! I can't give you a joke, because all the ones I've ever heard are shit, and I instantly forget them. Biggest joke? Me at Christmas! That's the biggest joke I ever heard. World's smallest violin playing just for me!
Funeral For A Friend are working on new material. Stay tuned for a longer extract from this chat in the coming weeks...

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
A lot of things got released this year...and as usual, a lot of things went right over my head. NOFX's Coaster was awesome. It's pretty cool that they're still putting out solid releases this far into their career. Most of the time bands that stay together for more than 15 years just end up being a total parody of themselves, but those dudes are still barging it hard.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Tiger woods instantly comes into my mind in light of recent events. But I gotta say that my two Heroes of 2009 are Tiny Pants and Dane, our bass player and drummer. Those dudes grew beards for the first time in their lives! It was such a magical moment to see them walk into practice freshly bearded, and for once, looking like real men!
I don't think I can pick a single Villain For '09. More like an evil league of villains....all the record labels that are choking the life out of bands and musicians to get those last pennies out of them before this whole "selling cd's" business goes tits up for them.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
I had to do some digging and consulted several family members and came up with this one...
What did one snow man say to the other snow man? Do you smell carrot?
It's at this point someone with a large hook pulls me off stage.
For their New Year plans, see NSDWHOA's Epistle To The Midgets. Check 'em out at www.myspace.com/nsdwhoa.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
I have no idea what came out this year, but I listen to Dark Side Of The Moon [Pink Floyd] more than anything else in my itunes. You ask why? Because it is the best sounding record ever. Especially with certain enhancements.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Hmmmmm. Hero might have to be maury, "you are not the father".
Villian would have to be my cable company for finding out I was getting free cable and then turning it off. Fuckers!
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
I'm 100% serious all the time. No time for jokes.
The debut album from Past Lives, Tapestry of Webs, is due out on Suicide Squeeze on 23rd February 2010.

SHAPES STARS MAKE
1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Vacilando Territory Blues - J Tillman (drummer for Fleet Foxes and Saxon Shore) This album caught me by surprise. It is incredibly sincere and moving.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Hmmm.... my Heroes are my wife and newborn son. Villians? Maybe H1N1 or bad radio.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
Honestly, I didn't know what a christmas cracker joke was until I googled it. I saw this one online and laughed for a half of a second.
Q: What did the Spanish fireman name his twin boys?
A: Hose A and Hose B
Shapes Stars Make's new album These Mountains Are Safe is due out on 19th January on Facedown Records.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Ours. I know it sounds big headed, but I've been waiting for this album since I first realised I wanted to be in a band!
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
A Hero would have to be Obama. He's already done so much to reverse 8 years of George W making the world the most unsafe it's ever been, but he's still got his work cut out.
As for a Villain I'm not sure... Maybe Jesse from Eagles of Death Metal since he's supposed to be the Devil reincarnate, but he was so lovely to u s on our European tour with them.....does that make him a villain (not sure)?
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
What's furry and minty?
A polo bear.
This City's new album We Were Like Sharks [RM REVIEW] is out now on Epitaph.
Devin Townsend
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT
1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
"Lemme think.... I don't even know, I have no idea. I bought lot of records this year, but none of 'em have been like the all time favourite kind of vibe right? There's some good records that I've bought. The new Wildhearts record [Chutzpah! - RM REVIEW] is really good. I like the new Gojira record, I think that was last year, though. I listen to things that aren't really that loud or heavy, and it's difficult for me to comment on that, because a lot of stuff I listen to, I don't even know what year it was made. I might have bought it this year but it could be ten years old, so I have no solid answer to that, I'm sorry!" [laughs]
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
"Ah, heroes and villains. Um... You know, I can't really say I think like that either. Heroes, let me think. Do I have any heroes right now? Or villains... You know, I think that it's like everybody's just trying to get by, in their own way, and some people that I at one time thought were villains ended up being heroes and vice versa. I'm sorry again, I don't have an answer for that one either! "[laughs]
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
"My best cheesy Christmas joke. Oh man. Uh..." [makes a noise like a goat on a power drill] "Do I have any jokes about Christmas? It's not like I've not been a fan of Christmas, but every year, I'm like 'oh my God it's back again'. Um, I got nothing directly pertaining to Christmas, but I got a joke, let me see.
"How do you get 30 Canadians out of a Swimming Pool?"
I give up, how do you get 30 Canadians out of a Swimming Pool?
"Alright you guys, time to get out of the pool. There you go."
[Golfclap]
"Thank you very much. That's my Canadian joke. There it is!" [laughs]

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Muse - The Resistance.
I've got a lot of favourites of 2009, but if I have to pick one, that's the first one that comes to the top of my head. Muse has always been one of my favourite bands, they've always been one of the best influences on me and my writing. It's a little hard to pick out, when I say it's one of my biggest influences I think some Trivium fans'll probably like "really? where? I don't see it!" But if you trace back a lot of different things on Ascendancy, some of the different chord structures, some of the vocal patterns, you can see it. Absolution is one of my favourite records of all time, but with The Resistance, they really have done something new - something that's still very them, but I guess they've pulled out all the best parts of their band.
And some people say it's incredibly production-thick, and there's a lot of stuff going on, but I kind of disagree. I think that Black Holes... was the album that was incredibly productionally-thick and very ambitious from the production aspect, but this record is, it's a little more cleaned up for me. It does do things that are towards that different end of Muse. I don't like to compare them to Queen, seeing that a lot of people just compare them to Queen - I'd definitely say they have a nice chunk of Queen in their music, including classical music and also contemporary rock. To me, a song like 'I Belong To You', that's probably one of my favourite songs on the album because it's so theatrical. Like when they come back in with that bass clarinet solo, on the main theme after they go into the aria, I think it was a French opera piece, it's really incredible stuff that they did, and really ambitious things, and I just absolutely love the record.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Across the entire world, I guess? Do they have to be from 2009? Let me think. Can we come back to that one?
Okay, the Villain I can think of is the only one I can think of right now. I mean there are definitely a lot, but I guess for the States, at least, the DC sniper was definitely a bad dude, but I believe he was executed a little while ago. He's the guy that was lurking in the trunk of a car and just sniping people down in DC. I would say he was a villain for sure.
And a Hero of this year? Fuck, um... Huh. Uh, trying to think of one. It's kind of bad that I can't think of anyone that did something good this year. I'm sure there are people that have been good, that's the thing about the media these days. All you ever hear about is bad stuff. Just because you don't hear about good stuff doesn't mean there isn't any good stuff going on, just I'm a pure example they don't hear about it. Yeah I can't think of one! [laughs]
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
I don't know any christmas jokes, unfortunately. I'm thinking in my head. I don't know if we even have any Christmas jokes. I don't know any, I wish I did!
Trivium will be working on their next album for the first half of 2010.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Travels With Myself And Another by Future Of The Left [RM REVIEW], on the grounds that they're better than all other bands, and 'Arming Eritrea' is arguably Falco's finest hour. Goddamn I love that band.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Hero: Guido Fawkes, for constantly harrassing the corrupt bastards in Westminster.
Villain: Gordon Brown, obviously.
Frank Turner's latest album Poetry Of The Deed [RM REVIEW] is out now on Xtra Mile Recordings.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Brand New's album [Daisy - RM REVIEW] is my favourite this year. It's always a refreshing to listen to them guys, and it's always something that I've not heard before. I think it's one of there best attributes about the band, being able to keep there sound but change it slightly and they have something completly new.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
My Hero of the year, and is every year, is Dave Grohl, he's just an inspriation for any aspiring musician.
I dont really have a Villian of the year. Kanye was a bit of a cock, but no suprise there.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
What's black and white and read all over?
The newspaper.
We Are The Ocean's new album Cutting Our Teeth is out on 25th January 2010 on Hassle Records.

Andy Nelson
WRENCH IN THE WORKS
1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Shrinebuilder just released a self titled record through Neurot Recordings. The band consists of members of Neurosis, Melvins and Sleep and those are 3 of my favorite bands in heavy music. The sonic force these guys dish out is amazing, definitely one of my favorite of the year.
2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Hero - Mastodon, that band plays and does whatever they want to and people love it!
Villains - Those bass drops that mosh bands use before breakdowns.
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
This one is more for the winter season but...
What do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire?
Frostbite!
Wrench In The Works release new album Increase/Decrease in February 2010 on Facedown Records.

1) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2009 AND WHY?
Tough one. There were some really great releases this year including Idlewild, Cursive, David Bazan, Manchester Orchestra, Monsters of Folk....but I'll have to go for Daisy by Brand New. It's an incredibly dark/dense record, which leaves you feeling drained after listening to it, but I like my rock to be noisy and clever and that's exactly what this record is.2) WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND VILLAINS OF 2009?
Villain of the year has to go to Nick Griffin, he really is a disgusting human being.
Hero of the year would have to be Bruce Springsteen. My dad and I went to see him perform at Hyde Park this year, and during his 3 hour set (the man is 60 years old!!) I thought this guy is a king, a real hero!
3) WHAT'S YOUR BEST CHEESY CHRISTMAS CRACKER JOKE?
Q. Who hides in the Bakery at Christmas?
A. A mince spy.
