Gafftape
"Gafftape"

review by Jon

This unsigned lot are mates of Grebo (incidentally how we got hold of this CD!), though musically they couldn't be much further from the Ataris-inspired pop-punk of their friends. This lot are highly Machine Head inspired, with opener Stealth 'Ooker having all the classic MH elements while vocalist Stu Cole has the ethereal croon of Chino Moreno which can switch to the growl of Corey Taylor at a moment's notice. Edge Down opens with a barrage of drums and doesn't let up from the start, arguably the heaviest and most immediate tune on the demo. Sweeties is like classic Metallica with a rap laid over the top. It's not as immediate as Stealth 'Ooker or Edge Down but is a grower; it mixes "Burning Red"-MH with a little of Korn's hip-hop sass. Challenge is very similar to "3 Dollar Bill Y'All" era Limp Bizkit, delivered with the vitriol of a male Kittie; and Touch It, while having questionable lyrics, is very Deftones.
The seeds are sown for a rather good band here, but they still need to work a bit before launching themselves onto an unsuspecting public.
