The Id
"The Foundation EP"
(Morphic Records)

review by Ruth

Track Listing:
Discount Directory
Throw
Venus Dial
Freezing

Quite frankly this was somewhat of a disappointment. Fair enough, this CD is nearly two years old, but if they're still giving it to people there's a kind of expectation that goes with this. "Discount Directory" sounds like the inside of my stomach on a Thursday after a trip to Jilly's. "Throw" is like the Smashing Pumpkins on qaaludes. "Venus Dial" sounds like it's trying to replicate Dreyfuss' irony.. and just failing to get it past an in-joke. The saving grace is that "Freezing" is potentially beautiful in parts, and polished up could have made The Crow Soundtrack.

The sad thing is that I've seen them play, and I know they have songs which are a hell of a lot better than this (see the CM5 CD review elsewhere this issue). Someone must think that they have potential, as they're off to America again to tour some clubs this Easter. But if they're going over there and flogging this CD, they're not going to be allowed to stay very long.

(a generous) 2.5/5
