Alabama 3
"Wade Into The Water"
(Elemental Records)

review by Ruth

Alabama 3's stylish mix of post-gospel soul and cliché Americana has polarised popular media opinion into the devoted and those who find their constant satire on middle America values a little wearing. But who cares? This is still still some of the finest twisted testifyin' bouncing stuff this side of the Mexican border. Not bad for a band from Brixton.

AM60
"Just a dream"
(Shifty Disco)

review by Ruth

Press for AM60 (or Always Music 60, after the shouts of their Superintendant at their former lodgings) has been quick to emphasise the bands connections with Fun Loving Criminals (whose drummer was one of the founding members). But this is closer to Ant from Hefner than the Crim's slick output. Simple smiling melody backed with New Yoik beats, it has the feeling of white teeth, clean-living youngsters. In baseball caps and Addidas.

Ash
"Burn Baby Burn"
(Infectious)

review by Ruth

Who says that indie bands are all limp wristed no-balls PAPstarzzz (TM) rejects who haven't got the strength to pull themselves out of bed, never mind onto the charts and into our hearts? Bollocks. All you whiny small-dick nu-metal bands can f**k-off. And take your closet NAM-by pamby lovers with you. After the lovey-dovey pop of 'Shining Light' Ash get back to some serious rock arse kicking with 'Burn Baby Burn'. And boy, had you better be scared. These guitar hooks are sharp, polished, and lie on the end of those polythene wires that they use for those horrible tuna nets that kill dolphins. Quite frankly, baby, with bait as tasty as this, the fish are doomed. Forget about the Darius incident - they got as much of a sadistic pleasure out of watching him flap about gasping for breath as you did. Genius.
