My Device – Jumbo Fiasco
Shifty Disco
My Device come are a misleading bunch. They seem to fuse Post-punk with flashes of heavier sensibilities, and yet sound frighteningly close to that jangly-guitar indie wank that's still all over our charts, while still managing to occasionally remind you of the Pixies. It's a combination that could end up more centred on being cool than actually being any good, but Jumbo Fiasco is so lively that numbers such as 'Slamming Doors' pop with so much energy they beg to be sung along to with a little too much beer in your belly.
It's also quite, quite bonkers, as 'Everything Is Inflatable' showcases perfectly – be it through the jerky, Mclusky-esque guitars, or vocals that bark "I am your mother! What's not to like about me?" For some, there'll be plenty not to like in their angular riffs and fitting vocalist, but it's something they pull off with enough skill to be more than just style over substance. Though this is a band that should pull in the hipsters like a sale on drainpipe jeans, My Device are a band you can actually enjoy and dance to, rather than be seen to be scene, immobile because of your £60 haircut.
