Leevil – S/T

Lee Callcut is f**king mental. That is clearly apparent after hearing this three-track demo. Each track is diverse – hell, a single track is diverse enough. Mashing up elements of Dancehall Reggae, Metal, Grime and electronic ear-buggery, it makes for uncomfortable listening even before you consider the lyrics.
Comical in a South Park way, it uses childish comments about body parts to fire digs at Bush and Blair ('Two Cocks In a Knot Used as a Garotte'), and the lyrics to 'First Person Shooter' are more disturbing than an Aphex-Twin nightmare. The press release openly admits Leevil's voice is far from tuneful, but when you hear him screaming "I'm A Wanker" over mind-scrambling electronics it's clear these are not the kind of songs you'd expect Mary Poppins to be coming up with to help the medicine go down. It's not particularly enjoyable, in fact it's mostly awful, but the musical ideas he has are in a territory rarely explored (for fear of insanity). The virtually unknown OxygenFad does this musical head-fuckery much better, but on these shores, this acquired taste looks to be solely in the hands of a man described as a 'one man plague'. Approach with extreme caution.
