Wojtek Godzisz – Beltane
Tigertrap Records
Let's be honest; the singer-songwriter market is a drastically overcrowded one, and one which has been a little short of originality of late. As a result, to be a master of this particular trade in this day and age, you have to bring something new to the table.
Enter former Symposium man Wojtek Godzisz. 'Beltane', the follow up to last year's Burning Ideals EP, is a starkly original and impressively experimental outing with genuine potential. Boasting an attention-seizing hook and unorthodox instrumentation, these three minutes manage to take in eastern-tinged violins, a classic piano part and – best of all – a verse melody that is reminiscent of 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'. B-side 'Silbury Hill' is more of the same, a heady mixture of world music influences and a more conventional indie sensibility. All in all, this is the sound of a man on top of his game - and win or lose, Wojtek Godzisz is playing this one on his own terms.
