Thousands of Reflections – Drones and Sharp Teeth
Headroom
As they gear up for a tour of the UK, Nottingham experimentalists Thousands of Reflections dust down, re-record and revamp debut EP Drones and Sharp Teeth for a second roll of the dice. Impressively, it seems as though the overhaul has done them good, as although their post-rock stylings are a little familiar, there's no denying the potential here.
Opener 'Hideouts' is the most accessible of the bunch, its smooth, bass-heavy stylings eventually contorting into a shapeshifting hard-rock anthem. Elsewhere, the epic strains of 'All The East Is Moving' is a different beast entirely, switching from laid-back atmospherics to a crushingly heavy finale just as you're beginning to wonder if it's outstayed its welcome.
With only the lilting atmospherics of 'Auld Pals' lapsing into unremarkable territory, there's enough here to keep you hanging on for round two. Although a couple of the tricks on show here have been pulled a few times before, Thousands of Reflections have the potential to shape them into something fresh.
