EvilMinded – Complex Corrupt
M.I.R. Records
EvilMinded do not like commercial music. Their website's 'about' section is full of bold statements of intent, proud to claim their material is free to download because "piracy is [their] way of life". Unsurprisingly, this seventh album is not comprised of 3 minute pop songs about girls and bling.
Complex Corrupt is a blast of industrial that draws from digital hardcore, punk and extreme metal. The vocals are often incomprehensible and more often slightly distorted. Fans of Combichrist and Rabbit Junk and their digitally metallic kin will be willing to embrace this noise emanating from Guatemala of all places. Those who know the aforementioned acts won't find much they haven't discovered before, but when it takes off, Complex Corrupt is blisteringly impressive. Second track 'Better' is fairly accurate in moniker; a blast of pulsing industrial menace. '32 Steps' is a threatening, pulsing stomper, and 'The Grotesque' – the longest on the album at four and three-quarter minutes – is a scrambling instrumental scouring.
Hit and meh rather than hit and miss, its weaker moments are never below average, but Evil Minded only have a couple of real standouts on this record. They might not want to make profit from their music, but despite the fact this one man project is seven albums in, the smart money would be on further improvement.
