Various – Pledge: A Tribute To Kerbdog
Stressed Sumo Records
Kerbdog made more of an impact with two albums than many bands achieve after five. While many of you may never have heard of this Irish quartet beforehand, but as a RM reader there's probably a sizeable chunk of your personal music collection that wouldn't be around if not for them. This tribute album sees a good mix of established and new British acts covering Kerbdog with similarly varied levels of success.
Bristol's Cars On Fire open proceedings admirably with the title track, and it's followed by a ferocious take on 'Severed' by Left Side Brain – a cover that works well because it simultaneously sounds very much like Left Side Brain and Kerbdog at the same time. Covers often work best when the artist brings their own identity to the song in question, which is why Frank Turner's take on 'Sally' is also a highlight; an acoustic romp that can't fail to put a smile on the face.
While there aren't really any duds, some tracks are a little too average, Dutch Schultz's cover of 'Hard To Live', Hold Your Horse Is' take on 'Secure' and Mike Got Spiked's 'Dry Riser', but it's more hit than miss thanks to Jamie Lenman's (we miss Reuben!) head-nodding, sax-featuring 'Mexican Wave', Ocean Bottom Nightmare's ferocious scream-through of 'On The Turn' and Stations seismic cover of 'Schizm'. While these tribute albums are often hit and miss, this at least remains true to the spirit of the band, some bring their own style to the covered songs, but it's a rarity to find such a release without someone butchering the subject matter.Rating: 4/5
