National Snack – Apply Machine
Scatty Cat Records
Quirky three-piece National Snack make a ramshackle noise that's surprisingly likeable, considering it's as unkempt and disorganised as a particularly dishevelled tramp. They call this sound 'mungrul music', and its mix of boy/girl vocals and stripped bare production brings to mind Sons & Daughters, Future Of The Left and Fugazi pretending to be garage punk bands. There's variation across this EP; unobvious rhythms and raucous vocals fire 'My Head Hurts' into a smashing party piece, whilst 'This Is Not Enough' is how that dreadful jangly-guitar indie would sound if it stopped making strong regional accents and a lack of ideas mandatory. Standout moment goes to 'Rock N Roll'; a riotous stomper that may have Rockmidgets wanting to shout "Play that funky music, white boy!" at every chorus, but ends with a far more fun sing along of "f**k this sh*t!". It'll be too rough around the edges for many, but there's enough potential to ensure the début album will be well worth investigating.
